The ‘DE SOUSA FOUNDATION’ has been the brain child of Dr Avinash De Sousa and his wife Mrs. Jaya De Sousa. The foundation has been started in the memory of Late Prof. Dr. Alan De Sousa (1932-2008) (ex Prof and Head – Department of Psychiatry, Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College) and Late Prof. Dr. Mrs. Dhanalakshmi De Sousa (1938-2005) (ex Prof and Head – Department of Psychiatry, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital), both senior psychiatrists and stalwarts of their era.

The foundation aims at carrying forward their dream of making Community Mental Health a reality and to take Mental Health and Wellness to the masses. A healthy mind is an essential part of a healthy human being. One must target authentic happiness along with a positive lifestyle to achieve holistic growth and development. The foundation aims to spread its wings and cater to the needs of everyone from young children to ageing population of the society.

        Children & the Adolscents

        These are some of the areas of work we are involved with in respect to children and adolescents. We work with mainstream, inclusive and special schools and help them detect and handle children with difficulties on an individual basis.

        Adults & the Common Man

        These are some of the topics on which we have conducted workshops for adults. These workshops are usually in groups 15-60 depending on the need and situation. The workshops are usually of two hours duration with a break. The main feature Of these workshops is practical and applicable solutions that are offered to complex problems that retard one’s growth and development.

        School & College Mental Health

        Handling Teenagers in a Modern World, Abusive Language and Bad Behaviour – key issues, Handling Exam Stress in Students, Handling A Modern Classroom, What Teachers can do about Bullying?, What Teachers need to know about Sex Education?

        Workshop for Parents

        These are some of the areas of work we are involved with in respect to training and guiding teachers and parents. We work with mainstream, inclusive and special schools and help them train their teachers and educate their parents to handle children with difficulties on an individual basis.

        Middle Age & Old Age Related Problems

        These are some of the topics on which we have conducted workshops for adults. These workshops are usually in groups 15-60 depending on the need and situation. The workshops are usually of two hours duration with a break. The main feature Of these workshops are practical and applicable solutions that are offered to complex problems that retard one’s growth and development.

        Corporate Mental Health

        These are some of the workshops that we conduct at a corporate level. We conduct these workshops in groups of 10-50. Some workshops may be specially modified based on the type of work, the areas of work the company is involved in and factors causing stress in a particular industry.

        Workshop for Caregivers & Relatives

        We conduct a number of workshops for caregivers and relatives of patients with psychological problems and developmental disabilities. These workshops are aimed to help the relative / caregiver understand the illness of the patient, the causes and long term course of the illness or disability, the nature of treatments available and most importantly the caregivers are given an understanding and insight into their role and behaviour while managing the patient.
